Context
Why this matters now
From 2 August 2026, designated authorities within the EU will begin supervising and enforcing the EU AI Act's literacy requirements (Article 4). Article 4 itself has been in force since February 2025: the obligation already exists. Fines for related AI Act breaches reach €15 million or 3% of global turnover, whichever is higher (European Commission, 2026).
Underneath that sits shadow AI: tools like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Claude being downloaded, or AI quietly embedded inside CRMs, productivity suites, HR platforms and workspaces — used by staff who often do not know they are using AI at all. If a regulator carried out an audit, would you know the scale of AI use in your organisation? Could you justify how and why an AI decision was made? Could you demonstrate who is accountable and prove your staff are trained in AI Literacy?
What you will take away
Six things you will leave with
- A plain-English read of the EU AI Act's literacy and competence requirements and what an Irish regulator will actually look for after 2 August.
- A practical and tiered definition of AI Literacy and how to ensure it translates to real AI capability within your organisation.
- Know where the shadow AI is sitting inside your existing tools — from commonly used apps like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Claude, to AI quietly embedded inside your CRM, HR platform or workspace.
- Discover whether your current training meets the literacy obligation, including the specific competencies staff need to demonstrate.
- What an auditable training trail looks like if a regulator opens an investigation, and the documentation gap most organisations have today.
- The culture and change-management piece that determines whether compliance actually sticks once certificates are issued.
